who am I?

A keenness to correct others as a child (which has flowed through to adulthood!) promptly led my teachers to recommend that I look to a career in law.

Outside of work I have twin boys who are six and a nearly five year’ old little girl. Three children within 16 months of each other certainly keeps me busy. Between work and family, I also enjoy a bit of tennis (and fancy myself as an undiscovered Martina Hingis). Fun fact, I share a birthday with my Mum. This means my husband can simultaneously offend us both by forgetting the most important day of the year.

If you’d like to catch up for a coffee feel free to get in touch at 021 752 251 or katherine@convexlegal.co.nz.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

A small-town girl from Central Hawke’s Bay, I started my career in a large law firm in Wellington.  After working at two large law firms and a telecommunications provider, I founded Convex Legal in January 2017 to provide clients with approachable legal services.

I finished university in 2006 after completing LLB(Hons) and BA in Psychology. My first law job was at Kensington Swan where I gained broad experience across the Corporate, Information Technology and Maori Legal Services teams. I was fortunate to take some time away from law to live in France to teach English and travel.

After Kensington Swan, I worked for DLA Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper) in the Corporate team specialising in commercial contracting. Next stop – Vodafone New Zealand where I learnt how the interface between legal advice and business decisions really works. From there a passion to spend more time doing property law and helping individuals and business owners, Convex was born.

I became a lawyer because I like arguing (and explaining to a lesser degree). Also, taking over the family farm would have meant far too many early mornings. I don’t do mud or mornings. Please be nice to me before 9am.

When I’m not at work, I’m at hockey. When I’m not organising, umpiring or watching hockey, I’m probably at some sort of committee meeting. Luckily, I now live in Island Bay, pretty close to the hockey turf, with my partner, Carl, and a mischievous dog, Baxter.

If you’d like to catch up for a coffee feel free to give me a call (04 390 2123) or sam@convexlegal.co.nz.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I’m originally from the Wairarapa, but I went to Otago to study law and science. I ended up staying down south for a couple of years after graduating, while I ran a hockey organisation, which I like to think gave me a bit of practical business experience. I then decided I should probably use my law degree. I moved to Wellington where I was admitted to the bar and started practicing in property law in 2016. I’ve been at Convex since 2018 and a Director since 2022.

I sit on the board of several charities, dealing with sport, physical activity, and the rainbow community.

I’m a bit of a geek for contracts and regulations and I enjoy being able to translate those into plain English for my clients. Whether you’re buying your first home, running a company or setting up a charitable trust, I’d be happy to walk you through the legal processes.

who am I?

I became a lawyer following a 12-year career working as an analyst in professional rugby.  I wasn’t drawn to the profession after watching Suits (unlike my younger colleagues, it seems) but rather a general interest in business and wanting to help people get things done, while avoiding the unexpected pitfalls.

Outside of work, you will usually find me running around after three young children and a black labrador.  Otherwise, I will be trying to keep fit (unsuccessfully), playing guitar (badly) and sabotaging my attempts to keep fit by partaking in everything the Wellington hospitality scene has to offer.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

Prior to joining Convex I spent 5 years in the financial services team at Bell Gully, with a particular focus on property and project finance.

I act for both financiers and developers in relation to both small and large-scale property developments.  I am also experienced in general corporate matters such as business sales, shareholder arrangements and general corporate finance.  So, I am well placed to assist with all aspects of your business or development.

Below are some examples of my experiences:

  • Acting for financiers and developers in relation to the development of residential subdivisions, apartments, commercial, industrial and retail units and hotels.  Including, negotiating loan and security documentation, and preparing title, lease and pre-sale reports.
  • Advising businesses on a range of commercial contracts, including sale and purchase agreements, shareholder agreements and services agreements.
  • Acting for NZX listed property funds in relation to the debt financing of their property portfolios.
  • Acting for financiers and corporate developers in relation to construction of power stations and a wind farm in Taranaki.
  • Acting for the New Zealand government in the procurement and delivery of large-scale projects, including by way of Public Private Partnership.

who am I?

I have always been interested in the law.  Whilst in my younger years it was criminal law that held my interest, in particular working out ways to commit the perfect crime when I would argue with my sister, it was when I was at college that I heard of the role of a legal executive and I knew straight away that was what I wanted to do.  My family tells me I have always been good at winning arguments and this is the perfect role for me.

Outside of work the majority of my time is spent with my family, as my daughter keeps me busy with all of her activities.  My family includes two very spoilt cats who rule our house.

I am born and bred in Wellington and have lived here my whole life.  I am lucky that the majority of my family also lives in Wellington.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I started work as a legal secretary whilst studying for my legal executive qualification at night.  I gained my legal executive qualification in 1997 and I have worked as a legal executive in various firms since then.  I started my career in small law firms, which gave me experience in many different areas of private client work.  Recently, after 13 years with a large commercial firm, I have come back to what I love, which is the small firm with the client contact and ongoing client relationships.

I have been the president of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executive and also an Independent Councilor on the National Committee of the Institute.  I loved my time in these roles, including assisting to draft and then present a verbal submission to a Parliamentary Select Committee in relation to law changes that would impact the role of a legal executive.  Whilst I no longer hold these roles due to having a young daughter and the time commitments involved, it is something that I am sure I will return to in the future.

My job is to try and make your life easier.  If you need to contact a law firm, you are often working through a stressful time in your life and I am here to try and alleviate as much of that stress as possible and make sure your transaction proceeds smoothly.

who am I?

When I first went to High School I wanted to be a poet. I was, and am, but it was never going to pay. So off to law school it was. I could make up some generic reason why I wanted to study law…saving the whales, world peace and prestige. But let’s be honest, it’s just not true.

It came down to Suits. It is safe to say it’s nothing like what you see on TV (I promise I have a law degree too!). I’ve enjoyed developing my legal career in the progressive forward-thinking practice that is Convex Legal.

Outside work, most of my free time is taken up by my passion of sport – in particular, basketball, rugby and cricket. I have also recently taken up ultimate frisbee (please don’t judge me– it really isn’t as bad as people say). My guilty pleasure is a mild butter chicken and a garlic nan (which the office has gotten know, every week).

If you’d like to catch up for a coffee feel free to give me a call (04 390 2123) or jordan@convexlegal.co.nz.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I joined Convex Legal at the beginning of 2020 after graduating from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Economics and minoring in Finance. During my studies, I also worked part time in a small general practice law firm. I have recently completed my studies required to be admitted to the bar.

I grew up in Lower Hutt. Outside of work, most of my free time is taken up by watching and playing sport. I also enjoy hanging out with friends and family.

I enjoy working in the challenging environment that a law firm provides, and I find it rewarding helping clients obtain their desired outcomes.

who am I?

I grew up in the sunny Hawke's Bay and moved to Wellington in 2016. I first became interested in the law through the Netflix show Suits, and I also wanted marry a prince like Meghan Markle.

I’m a huge dog lover so you can imagine my excitement when Katherine’s dog, Mabel, comes into the office. I’m also an avid green tea drinker (yes, I’ve been reminded it tastes like dirt).

During the week I keep the office entertained with Gen Z humour and keep myself entertained by annoying Jordan. On the weekends you’ll often find me doing Pilates, pottering around my flat or spending an embarrassing amount of time on Tiktok.

If you’d like to catch up for a coffee feel free to give me a call (04 390 2123) or laura@convexlegal.co.nz.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I studied a conjoint law and commerce degree at Victoria University, majoring in management. While at law school I worked in a barrister’s chambers where I was lucky enough to share scones with some of the top lawyers in New Zealand.

I began at Convex Legal in February 2021 as a graduate and formally became a lawyer in June 2021.

My interest in property law and asset management meant Convex Legal was the perfect fit. Convex Legal is a fun, positive and progressive workplace that ‘walks the walk’ when it comes to creating a rewarding culture.

who am I?

I grew up in the mighty Waikato, lucky enough to experience my childhood growing up on a rural property. We made our way to Wellington when my husband was transferred with his job - trading the fog for the wind.

In my spare time I enjoy running through some of the great tracks that we have here in Wellington. On my bucket list is to run in the New York half marathon.  After eight unsuccessful ballot attempts, I was selected but unfortunately the race was cancelled at the last minute due to the onset of Covid, leaving us to unpack our bags and cancel our holiday.  I have my fingers crossed to be able to run next March!

I am also an avid gardener and enjoy mowing lawns!  I also love to travel – having a son and brother living in New York is a bonus and a good excuse for a shopping trip. I have three (nearly four) beautiful grandchildren which I spend a lot of time with and that keep me young and on my toes. The best part of course is being able to hand them back when they misbehave.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

I am one of those annoying people who love lists and being very organised.  I have joined Convex Legal after working for fourteen years in a large corporate law firm where I had plenty of opportunities to gain valuable administrative experience and put my lists into practice!

I saw the opportunity to become part of the Convex Legal team as an awesome opportunity to become part of a new dynamic law firm and to have the wonderful experience of working in a paperless office!

who am I?

My background is a little different to your typical legal exec.

I was first hired as Katherine’s nanny to help with her three children. When the kids started going to school there wasn’t much I was needed for at home any more but apparently I was so likeable Katherine wanted to keep me around.

I actually initially worked for Convex Accounting, but it turns out accounting wasn’t for me (those guys like spreadsheets way too much) Thankfully, Katherine understood my pain (she’s married to an accountant…) and bought me over to Convex Legal.

I love long walks along the beach listening to crime podcasts. I'm a master at cooking cheese on toast and would love to assist you with all your conveyancing needs.

If you would like to catch up for a coffee feel free to give me a call (04 390 2123) or madison@convexlegal.co.nz.

Or, if you'd prefer the typically dull bio you'd expect:

As soon as I purchased my first property, I found my true passion (well, not really, but it sounds good in a bio). From there I have sold, bought a new property, and moved. More seriously, buying, selling, and then buying again has given me an excellent insight into the conveyancing process.

I have dealt with my own pre-settlement inspections, my purchaser asking for price reductions, and bought houses with issues. Finding my way through these issues helps me get through property transactions for our clients every day.

I completed my Legal Executive studies in 2021. I am based in both the Wellington and Mana office.

Library books and office chairs are my favourite snacks. When I get bored, I like to pull cords out of computers and distract everyone from their work by getting pats and tummy scratches. I know how to listen, but I choose not to which makes the office humans mad… I think its fun though hahaha.

You can find me sleeping on the couch with my tongue hanging out or working hard around the office as a living, breathing vacuum.
